Get out your running shoes!
The 32nd annual Memorial Day Run will be held on Monday, May 28th. You can still sign up to run in the 10k, 5k or Fun Run. Drop by the library or call 314-727-3150 for more information. On-line registrations can be made at www.active.com . This run benefits the Green Center, the University City Children’s Center, U City in Bloom and the library. It’s a great event - lots of fun meeting your neighbors. And afterwards? Head to the Heman Park pool which will be opening for the season later in the day.
Organizers might still need volunteers. If you can help, contact Jan Oberkramer at the Green Center at 725-8314 or joberkramer@thegreencenter.org .
Want to help some U City trees?
University City resident Rose Jenkins is forming a “Friends of Trees” group to help work on the trees along the Midland Boulevard median. Rose has been in contact with St. Louis County, who manages the trees, voicing her concern about the ways the trees have been mulched. She is looking for people willing to help “de-mulchify” the trees, which have been mulched too high
for the trees’ health. She has the support of St. Louis County, which has supplied her with safety vests and gloves. Some additional volunteers would help the work get done more quickly. If you are interested in helping contact Rose at plasma@brick.net or call 863-2241. Ms. Jenkins has been in touch with University City’s forester James Crowe about this project.

It’s time for the summer reading club!
The following is from the University
City Public Library. GET A CLUE @ THE LIBRARY” SUMMER READING PROGRAM. The Youth Services Department is gearing up for another great Summer Reading Program which will
run from June 3 - August 3. A complete schedule of weekly activities and special programs will be available in the department. Teen Volunteers are needed for the 2007 Summer Reading Program as well. Volunteers listen to children report on their reading, award prizes, assist with special events and attend fun “volunteer only” events. Volunteers also participate in the program by reading and reporting and earn “volunteer only” prizes. Volunteering at the library is a good way to earn Community Service hours required by many schools. Applicants must have completed 6th grade, enjoy working with children, have a U.City library card and be available to work one or two times a week for at least 4 weeks of the program. Attendance at a training session is required. For more information visit the Youth Services Department on the second floor.
And speaking of books….
A plug for a University City author who has written a book for children. University City resident and retired professor Allan Richard Shickman has published a novel entitled Zan-Gah: A Prehistoric Adventure. In it the hero, Zan-Gah, seeks his lost brother in a dangerous world. Encountering suffering, conflict, love and victory, he passes from an uncertain boyhood
to a tried and proven manhood and a position of leadership among his people. Zan-Gah is an exciting, thought-provoking, and beautiful story. It is intended for readers age 11 to 111. The website is: www.zan-gah.com
